This July, I had the thrill and honor to attend the induction ceremony at The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.  That day, as The Hall established the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, all of us could feel Buck's encouraging presence.

As member of the Veterans Committee at The National Baseball Hall of Fame, Buck made sure many of his fellow Negro Leaguers are enshrined there.  Now, his smiling statue will be showcased there forever, at the front ticket entrance.  His relaxed stance, Monarchs hat and warm smile are a comforting reminder of this ambassador to Kansas City and to all of baseball.

"It's a day we've been looking forward to for a long time," said Jeff Idelson, the Hall's president. "It's a recognition he's certainly deserving of. The award is as high an honor as we can give. The fact that it'll be presented no more often than every three years speaks not only to the selectiveness but to how we felt about Buck."

Buck co-founded the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in 1990 and served with a contagious passion and enthusiasm.  His example has been an inspiration to millions.  As pleased as I was to be there for the unveiling of Buck's award at the Hall of Fame, I am equally honored to have called Buck my friend.

Has someone inspired your life's work as Buck has mine? I'd love to hear from you!
